PHS boys go into overtime to beat Cascade, 55-49

For the second straight game to open the season, the Philomath High School boys basketball team rallied in the second half for a victory. On Saturday at Cascade, the Warriors came back from a 20-15 halftime deficit and ended up with a 55-49 victory in overtime.

Three players hit double figures for Philomath in scoring led by senior Michael Lundy’s 16 points on four fields and 7 of 8 free throws. Sophomore Ty May finished with 12 points on four field goals and 3 of 6 free throws. Senior Chase Beardsley had 11 points on three field goals and 4 of 4 free throws.

All three of those players scored in overtime for Philomath along with a couple of free throws by sophomore Cole Beardsley.

The Warriors (2-0) got off to a slow start with just 15 points in the first two quarters but Philomath stayed within striking distance. Cascade was able to maintain its five-point lead heading into the fourth quarter but the Warriors finished strong.

Lundy scored seven points in the fourth quarter. Both Lundy and Chase Beardsley buried 3-pointers over the last 8-minute stretch. And the Warriors did well at the free-throw line, going 10 of 12 in the fourth and 22 of 26 for the game.

Kellen Sande scored 14, Dom Ball had 13 and Carson Molan finished with 11 to lead the Cougars (1-1).

Philomath will play at home at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Sisters. The Outlaws got off to an 0-2 start with losses of 60-59 to Summit’s JV and 50-31 to Sweet Home.
