In a wild end to Philomath High’s boys basketball season on Thursday, the Warriors went into triple-overtime against Class 5A Springfield but in the end had to walk off the court with a 73-70 loss.

The Millers opened up with a 16-12 lead in the first quarter with an offensive attack that saw five different players scoring points. Philomath stayed close with a couple of 3-pointers by Chase Beardsley and baskets from Dillon Olsen and Ty May.

In the second quarter, neither team generated much offense but Springfield held on to a four-point advantage at the break, 23-19. Then in the third, the Warriors came out swinging to take a 36-34 lead into the fourth quarter.

Cole Beardsley, who had been scoreless in the first half, scored nine points in the third quarter. Post player Chad Russell also had his first points of the game with three baskets.

The Beardsley brothers both were hitting in the fourth quarter on 3-pointers and free throws. May hit a couple of baskets and Preston Kramer sank two free throws. The game was tied 53-53 going into overtime.

The score remained tied at the end of the first OT, 57-57, and at the end of the second OT, 66-66. Springfield secured the win in the third OT with a 7-4 finish. In the extra periods, senior Trey Bryant scored seven of his 21 points and senior Clayton Becerra had five of his 22.

Philomath’s points in the extra time included eight from Chase Beardsley — two of his baskets being 3-pointers — three from May and two each from Olsen, Isaac Lattin and Russell.

Chase Beardsley finished with 22 points and Cole Beardsley had 16 for the Warriors.
