The Philomath High School baseball team headed into the bottom of the fifth inning in a 4-4 tie at Class 5A La Salle Prep on Thursday in Milwaukie, but the home club finished strong and took down the Warriors, 8-5.
Philomath (8-7) will play Monday at Elmira, a team that takes a 6-7 record into a doubleheader against Cottage Grove on Saturday. La Salle Prep goes to 9-4.
The Falcons took a 3-0 lead in the second before the Warriors could get on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. Logan Carter singled with two outs and would come around to score.
Philomath cut the deficit to 3-2 in the fourth. Adam Hernandez opened the inning with a single and then stole second, third and home.
La Salle Prep went up 4-2 in the bottom half but Philomath came back in the top of the fifth. Hernandez hit a one-run single to bring in Carter, who had reached on a walk. Two batters later, Alek Russell singled to drive in Cameron Ordway, who hit a single earlier in the inning.
La Salle Prep broke the 4-4 tie in the bottom half. With two outs, a Falcons player reached on an error and two runners ended up scoring.
In the sixth, La Salle Prep added two more runs on back-to-back one-run singles.
Philomath got the tying run to the plate in the seventh. Chase Beardsley singled in Ty May, who had earlier hit a single to get on base, to cut the Falcons lead to 8-5. Skylar Brolin followed with a single to put two men on base. But the game ended on a flyout to right field.
Ordway went 3 for 4 to lead the PHS offense. May, who pitched for the Warriors, went 2 for 3. Both Hernandez and Brolin were 2 for 4.
Philomath outhit the Falcons in the game, 12-7.
