Philomath High’s boys and girls golf teams competed Thursday in a tournament hosted by North Marion at Langdon Farms Golf Club near Aurora. Logan Matthews for the boys and Isabelle Muir for the girls turned in the top scores from among the group of local golfers.

In the boys’ competition, 10 full teams competed with Stayton taking top honors by seven strokes over runner-up Cascade. The Warriors finished a respectable fifth with 367. Senior Isaac Laro of Stayton was the individual champion with a three-under par 68.

Individually for PHS, Matthews, a senior, came in with a 41 on the front nine and a 44 on the back nine for a total score of 84, which placed him seventh overall. Matthews made par on seven holes and had a birdie on the second.

The team’s other four golfers that counted toward the team score all placed in the individual top 25 — senior Hudson Raab (18th, 93), senior Silas Pittman (20th, 94) and senior Elijah Bush (25th, 96). Senior Caleb Russell was right there in the mix in 29th with a 97.

The girls tournament only had three full teams although several schools sent individual golfers. In the team race, Riverdale won with Taft second and Philomath third. The individual title went to Santiam Christian junior Akira White, who shot an 83.

Philomath’s Muir had the strongest back nine among any of the team’s entrants. The Warriors junior had scores of 59 and 53 for a total of 112, which put her in a tie for 15th overall. Another junior, Shaylee May, finished 18th with a 116.

Senior Anneka Steen had the top PHS score through the first nine holes with a 55 and finished the tournament with an overall score of 120, which got her 20th place. Senior Kynlee Albin (124) and senior Ashleigh Brown (134) rounded out the PHS lineup.

The boys are scheduled to compete again this coming Monday in a Marshfield-hosted tournament at Shadow Hills Country Club at Junction City. The girls’ schedule shows their next competition as April 21 at Santiam Golf Club at Aumsville for a tournament hosted by Stayton.
