The Philomath High School boys tennis team dropped an 6-0 decision to Marist Catholic Thursday in a league-opening road match in Eugene.

The Spartans won three singles matches and three doubles matches in straight sets. No entries or forfeits were reported at No. 4 singles or No. 4 doubles to account for the final score.

The closest match of the afternoon occurred at No. 2 doubles. Freshman Cedric Gaskey and sophomore Elijah Robinson pushed the opponent but fell short in a 6-3, 6-4 result.

In a No. 2 singles match, PHS sophomore Nate Houck went up against one of the top players in the league last season, junior Alexander Ricketts, in a 6-1, 6-1 match.

Philomath (1-4, 0-1) is scheduled to host The Dalles at 4 p.m. Friday.

In girls tennis, Philomath’s scheduled home match vs. Marist was called off. The girls are scheduled to play next at 4 p.m. Tuesday against Cascade.
