Four games in, the Philomath High boys soccer team still hasn’t allowed a goal.

The Warriors’ latest victim was Cascade in what served as the Oregon West Conference opener for both teams on Thursday. Philomath’s Silas Pittman and Mateo Candanoza both scored in a 2-0 victory.

Pittman’s goal came in the 20th minute. The play developed out of a long free kick downfield that Pittman ran down and buried with his left foot. Nixon Mooney flicked the ball to Pittman for the first of his two assists.

The game remained 1-0 until the 55th minute of the second half when Candanoza found the net. Mooney ran to a through ball down the left, cut it and found Candanoza for the finish.

Philomath (4-0) will next play on Sept. 27 at home against Newport in a game that’s scheduled for an earlier-than-usual start at 3:30 p.m. The Cubs will come in with a 3-1-1 record with the tie against Tillamook and the loss, a 1-0 final, to North Marion — both exceptional opponents.
