Seven-Year-Old Boy Dies—Merle Richard Gates, seven-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Gates of the Beaver Creek neighborhood, died this morning at the Corvallis General Hospital where he was brought recently for medical attention. The funeral service will be held from Bovee’s parlors at 2 o’clock Friday afternoon and interment will be in Newton cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Gates reside 14 miles south of Corvallis.

Merle Richard Gates, 6, died Aug. 9, 1923, at Corvallis General Hospital. He was buried at Newton Cemetery on Aug. 10.
The son of Jack J. Gates and Bessie Blanche (Pickens) Gates, Merle was born Oct. 25, 1916, in Benton County. His father was a 24-year-old farmer and his mother was a 22-year-old housewife. His parents were married in October 1915.
A short news item in the Aug. 10, 1923 edition of the Gazette-Times reported that the child died early on the morning of Aug. 9 at the hospital following appendicitis, which required an operation, and he later developed pneumonia.
According to the 1920 census, they lived in Benton County’s Willamette Precinct.
