Cascade senior Lupe Peralta threw a one-hitter to lead his team to a 4-0 shutout over visiting Philomath on Wednesday to even the Oregon West Conference series between the two teams. The Warriors had posted a 7-3 win over Cascade in Philomath on Monday.

Peralta retired eight of the first nine batters he faced with the lone base runner over that stretch being a walk by Alek Russell to lead off the second. Cameron Ordway broke up Peralta’s no-hitter with a two-out single in the third.

The Warriors’ most serious threat came in the fourth. David Griffith led off with a walk, stole second and reached third when Ty May got aboard on an error. May then swiped second to put two PHS base runners in scoring position with one out in what at the time was still a scoreless game. But Peralta got out of the jam by striking out the next two batters to end the inning.

Philomath got batters on base on only two other occasions when Ordway walked in the fifth and Chad Russell walked in the seventh.

Cascade took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Zac Rife and Gunnar Stromo both walked and Jordan Maldonado followed with a single to load the bases. That brought up Peralta, who helped his own cause with a one-run single to score Rife. Stromo scored on a passed ball and Shawn Kuenzi worked a bases-loaded walk to force in Maldonado.

The Cougars added another run in the fifth on a solo home run by Caleb Boyles.

May pitched five innings for Philomath and allowed four hits and five walks with five strikeouts. Brayden Shenk pitched one inning and allowed one hit but struck out the other three batters he faced.

The series returns to Philomath on Thursday with the first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
