The Philomath High School volleyball team swept through Newport Tuesday night, 25-18, 25-18, 25-17, in an Oregon West Conference matchup on the coast. The Warriors improved to 10-4 overall, 4-1 in the conference while Newport dropped to 6-7 and 1-4.

Coach Whitney Thomas said it was a great night all around.

“The team worked hard in finishing tonight, which we have been struggling with, and their perseverance paid off,” Thomas said.

Thomas said senior Taylor Hudson and freshman Alyssa Stanley were factors at the net, commenting that they “did a good job in the middle for us defensively and got their hands on a lot of blocks.”

Hudson was credited with five stuff blocks. In the hitting department, both junior Nora Stanley and senior Shaylee May had 11 kills.

“We struggled at the service line at times tonight but it’s to be expected when we’re trying to serve tough, so that’s something we can work on over the next week,” Thomas said.

OSAA approves boys volleyball as sanctioned sport
The Oregon School Activities Association’s delegate assembly voted Monday to make boys volleyball an officially sanctioned activity.
The decision will see boys volleyball begin its first season as a sanctioned activity this spring following two years as an “emerging sport.”
Oregon becomes the 26th state to sanction boys volleyball at the high school level. The sport is the first to be added to OSAA’s offerings since girls wrestling was approved ahead of the 2023-24 school year.
The sport has demonstrated growth in Oregon with 68 varsity teams competing last spring across multiple classifications. Philomath High was among those teams competing last season and the Warriors finished first in Special District 2 and participated in a culminating tournament in Hillsboro.

Philomath will begin its second trip through the conference Thursday with a jaunt over to Sweet Home. The Warriors defeated the Huskies in three sets on Sept. 23. Sweet Home will bring in records of 9-8 overall, 2-3 in the league. The match is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
