In a match with first-place implications in the Oregon West Conference, the North Marion boys soccer team came from behind to defeat Philomath Tuesday afternoon, 2-1.
The Warriors took the early lead when senior Zach Grapoli finished with an assist by junior Jacob Hernandez. The game remained 1-0 until late in the half when North Marion scored goals in the 33rd and 37th minutes.
Neither team found the net in the second half as the Huskies held on for the victory.
“We had more and better chances but couldn’t find the equalizer in the second half,” PHS coach Dave Ellis said.
North Marion leads the Oregon West Conference with a 4-0 record. Stayton, which was tied by Newport last week, is sitting in second at 3-0-1. The Cubs are in third at 2-1-1 and the Warriors fourth at 2-2.
The Huskies go to 4-2-1 overall while Philomath’s record now stands at 6-2.
The Warriors are scheduled to play at 4 p.m. Thursday at home against Newport in another key league matchup.
