Philomath High School may have had only six hits in Friday’s game at Mazama but the Warriors made them count in an 11-3 victory.
Senior Brayden Shenk hit a three-run home run to highlight a four-run fourth and followed up with a bases-clearing double to highlight a four-run seventh in the Warriors’ win. Mazama had 11 hits in the loss but Philomath’s pitching and defense kept the damage to a minimum as the Vikings stranded eight base runners.
Shenk got the start for Philomath and he pitched into the fourth inning with a stat line that included nine hits, four runs and one walk allowed against two strikeouts. Senior David Griffith threw three innings and allowed two hits, no runs and three walks with three strikeouts. Junior Mason Stearns relieved in the seventh for the final two outs.
Shenk, batting in the No. 9 spot, went 2 for 4 with six RBIs. Sophomore Logan Matthews had a one-run single, walked three times, scored four runs and collected two RBIs in the win. Freshman Wylie Griffith went 2 for 4 with a pair of one-run singles. Senior Silas Barton went 1 for 2 and drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.
Philomath’s top five batters in the lineup went a combined 0 for 15 while the bottom four finished a combined 6 for 11.
The Warriors (3-3) are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday with a noon matchup against Henley and a 2:30 p.m. meeting with Klamath Union. Both of those games are scheduled to be played on Henley High’s field.
