The Philomath High School girls basketball team built momentum early and rolled to a 52-23 Oregon West Conference victory at Stayton on Tuesday night.
The Eagles entered the game with a 7-2 league record — those losses coming by one point in the season opener vs. Cascade and a week later at Philomath by 28 points. But despite having a good record on paper, the home team could not keep up with the Warriors, trailing 21-9 by the end of the first quarter and 34-14 at halftime.
The conference standings indicate that Philomath has clinched first place, which earns the Warriors a berth in the 4A state tournament that has been organized. Philomath (10-0 OWC, 10-1 overall) will try to finish league play unbeaten with road games Wednesday at Newport and Friday at Sweet Home.
In the victory over the Eagles, junior Sage Kramer finished with 27 points on 12 field goals and a free throw. Kramer had 19 points by halftime and scored her other eight in the third before leaving the blowout.
Senior Kaili Saathoff scored eight and senior Mia Rust had six.
Madelynn Mitzel buried a pair of 3-pointers to lead Stayton in scoring with six.
