The Philomath High School boys basketball team put together a strong attack in the second half to pull away from Stayton, 59-46.
The Warriors led by just one point at the intermission but shut down Stayton’s offense in the third quarter and then outscored the visitors in the fourth to improve to 7-3 on the season.
“We didn’t change anything, we just challenged our kids to play hard in the second half,” PHS coach Blake Ecker said. “They stepped up to the plate and did a better job on their best player.”
Stayton junior Jacob Axmaker had 17 points by halftime and was slowed a bit in the second half to finish with 30 on the night.
“We started playing together and passing the ball and got wide-open looks,” Ecker said. “It’s a lot easier to shoot when you have a wide-open shot. We did a much better job tonight in the second half.”
Philomath had a balanced offensive attack on the hardwood with Cole Matthews finishing with 13, Ty May scoring 12 and Chase Beardsley adding 11. Chad Russell with eight and Cole Beardsley with seven also had some key points.
The Warriors took advantage of their opportunities at the free-throw line by going 9 for 9.
Philomath will play at home again Wednesday with Newport scheduled to visit. The Cubs come into the game with a 1-10 record but nearly pulled off an upset on Monday, losing by just two points to Sweet Home.
