The Philomath High School girls soccer team improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the Oregon West Conference with a 4-0 victory Tuesday evening at Stayton.

Sophomore Kya Bolton scored two goals and had an assist, senior Ana Candanoza and sophomore Bella Nunez also found the net and the Warrior defense posted its third straight shutout.

“It was a wet night and took us a bit to settle in,” Warriors coach Mat Phelps said. “But we opened up more in the second half and played well.”

Candanoza’s goal in the 15th minute represented the only scoring in the first half.

But in the second half, the Warriors found more success on the offensive end with Nunez scoring in the 42nd minute for a 2-0 advantage. Bolton was credited with an assist on the play.

Bolton then scored in the 46th and 65th minutes.

“We had lots of opportunities and lots of corner kicks,” Phelps said.

Philomath’s defense has allowed just four goals this season — three of those in a loss to Marist.

Stayton dropped to 3-2-1 overall, 1-1 in the Oregon West.

The Warriors will hit the road again Thursday for a trip to Cascade. The Cougars have struggled so far this season with records of 1-5 overall, 0-2 in the conference. The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
