In a matchup of unbeatens in the Oregon West Conference Tuesday night, Cascade worked through a tough start to defeat Philomath, 14-25, 25-23, 27-25, 25-17.

The Warriors dropped to 8-4 overall, 2-1 in the league while the Cougars improved to 9-4 and 3-0.

“A tough loss after winning the first set,” PHS coach Whitney Thomas said. “We had plenty of opportunities to win tonight and just couldn’t get it done.”

Warriors junior Megan Ward led a three-pronged offensive attack with a team-high 17 kills. Junior Nora Stanley and senior Shaylee May each had 13 kills.

“We had some great moments offensively, especially Megan who really stepped up and had an amazing night at the net,” Thomas said.

Senior setter Avery Smith finished with 41 assists.

“Avery worked so hard for her team tonight as well, getting to any ball she could to set it,” Thomas said.

Nora Stanley had three aces from the service line.

“Our defense also had moments of brilliance and then we faltered at other moments,” Thomas said on the performance. “We’ll learn from tonight and be ready to play them at home in a couple of weeks.”

The Warriors and Cougars will meet again on Oct. 16 in the PHS gym.

Philomath will host North Marion at 6 p.m. Thursday. The Huskies have struggled to a 2-8 overall record so far this season.
