In a showdown between two of the top girls soccer teams in the Oregon West Conference, Newport survived to take a 1-0 victory over Philomath on Tuesday evening on the coast.

The Warriors (3-2 overall, 1-1 Oregon West) fell into the one-goal deficit in the first half, missed on a penalty kick just before halftime and had opportunities over the final 40 minutes but couldn’t cash in.

“Really flat and reactive in first half,” PHS coach Mat Phelps said. “Controlled second half with much better energy but couldn’t find the net.”

Philomath had a chance to tie the score near the end of the first half on the PK opportunity but Phelps said Newport’s goalkeeper “made a great save” to turn away the Warriors.

Newport’s goal came in the 23rd minute when senior Piper Thompson scored with an assist to sophomore Brisa Aguilar.

The Cubs improved to 5-0-1 overall, 1-0-1 in the Oregon West.

The Warriors will see the field next on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. against visiting North Marion. The Huskies are another top team in the league and will bring in a 3-1-1 overall record following Tuesday’s 8-0 victory over Stayton.
