The Philomath High boys tennis team’s four singles players will compete in the championship bracket’s second round later this week in the 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 2 Tournament.

The tournament’s opening round occurred Monday at Molalla with Johnny Pickett and Jackson Rice both advancing with victories. Pickett defeated Jayden Nguyen of Molalla, 6-2, 6-3, and Rice defeated North Marion’s Gabriel Gomez, 6-1, 6-0. Andrew Leonard and Sawyer Ainsworth advanced with byes.

In doubles, Lane Schell and Gradin Fairbanks were victorious by a 6-2, 6-3 count over a pair from Estacada. Jackson Holroyd and Osvaldo Garcia-Bazan also had a victory by a 6-3, 6-2 margin over their opponents from North Marion.

Ethan Aynes and Owen Thomas lost to an Estacada pair and Nicholas Purcell and Ahren Harris dropped their match to a team from Molalla. Those two teams will see their next action in the consolation bracket.

The tournament continues Thursday and Friday at the Salem Swim and Tennis Club in Salem.
