Philomath High standout cross-country runners Leo Pausch and Lukas Hernandez competed Friday in the sixth annual Rose City Championships.
Pausch, a senior, covered the course in 16 minutes, 0.15 seconds to finish 51st out of 183 runners competing in the invitation-only race. Hernandez, also a senior, came in with a time of 16:21.83 and finished 83rd.
Malachi Schoenherr, a senior from Sheldon, won the race in 14:39.22.
Olivia Hernandez, an eighth grader from Philomath, won the 3,000-meter middle school race with a personal-record time of 10:52.56.
Pausch and Hernandez will run again Saturday at the 40th annual Paul Mariman Invitational. Joining them in the varsity race will be junior Galen Murch, junior Jacob Hernandez, sophomore Sammy Hernandez, freshman Braeden Colvin and junior Cam Herbert.
The varsity girls race will feature sophomore Cassidy Smart, freshman Sienna Bushnell, sophomore Reagan Nuño, sophomore Libby Kramer and junior Lucy Thomas.
Coach Joe Fulton reported that the meet will feature 527 runners from 15 high schools, 10 middle schools and two youth clubs.
The event begins at 11 a.m. with middle school races (girls first, then boys at 11:30) followed by the presentation of awards. The high school portion of the meet begins with junior varsity races at 1 p.m. (girls) and 1:30 p.m. (boys). The varsity girls are scheduled to compete at 2 p.m., followed by the varsity boys at 2:30 p.m. The high school awards will wrap up the afternoon at 3 p.m.
