SATURDAY, APRIL 11
• 6:43 p.m. — Troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 34 about 3 miles west of Lebanon that took the lives of Kayla Marie Fonseca, 35, of Sweet Home, and Ashley Sue Fraley, 31, of Lebanon. OSP’s preliminary investigation indicated that a westbound Hyundai Elantra driven by a 55-year-old Sweet Home woman was traveling on Highway 34 when it hydroplaned and crossed into the eastbound lane. The Hyundai collided head-on with Fraley’s eastbound BMW 32L. Fonseca, a passenger in the Hyundai, and Fraley were both pronounced deceased at the scene. The Hyundai’s driver was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries.
SUNDAY, APRIL 12
• 3:48 p.m. — Troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 97 near milepost 220 in rural Klamath County that took the life of Mark Evan Simpson, 48, of Portland. OSP’s preliminary investigation indicated that Simpson was driving a northbound Kia Forte when it entered the scene of a three-vehicle non-injury crash. The Kia crossed the centerline and proceeded through the southbound travel lane and collided head-on with a semitruck driven by a 59-year-old Richmond, British Columbia, man pulling onto the shoulder to avoid a disabled vehicle from the first crash. As a result of the collision, the Kia spun back across the northbound lanes and came to rest against a tree off the northbound shoulder of the highway. Simpson was declared deceased at the scene.
• 7:06 p.m. — Troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 30 about 1 mile west of Rainier that took the life of Randy Charles Bloom, 62, of Scappoose. OSP’s preliminary investigation indicated that a westbound Subaru Outback driven by a 69-year-old Longview, Washington, man was traveling near Rainier when it crossed into the eastbound lane colliding head-on with Bloom’s eastbound Ford Focus. Bloom was declared deceased at the scene. A passenger in the Ford, a 59-year-old Scappoose woman, was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. The Subaru’s driver was transported by Life Flight to an area hospital with serious injuries.
TUESDAY, APRIL 14
• 11:51 a.m. — Troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 84 near The Dalles that took the life of Ryan Christopher King, 38, of West Richland, Washington. OSP’s preliminary investigation indicated that an Oregon Department of Transportation attenuator vehicle operated by a 42-year-old The Dalles man was supporting a mobile brooming operation sweeping along the center median on I-84. The attenuator vehicle was positioned and stationary in the left lane as a safety barrier for the sweeper ahead when it was struck from behind by King’s Harley-Davidson motorcycle. King was pronounced deceased at the scene.
• 10:03 p.m. — Troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 95 near milepost 101 in rural Malheur County that took the lives of Rohit Ror, 27, of Fresno, California, and Gary Albert Diederich, 74, of Greencreek, Idaho. OSP’s preliminary investigation indicated that Ror was driving a southbound Honda Accord near Jordan Valley when it entered the northbound lane for an unknown reason. The Honda collided head-on with Diederich’s northbound Dodge Ram towing a utility trailer. Ror was pronounced deceased at the scene. Despite lifesaving attempts by a passing motorist, Diederich died at the scene. OSP wanted to extend its heartfelt gratitude to the passing motorist who tried to save Diederich’s life. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 15
• 2:48 p.m. — Troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 101 north of Bandon that took the life of Mariah Mayfield, 18, of Coquille. OSP’s preliminary investigation indicated that a white Mercedes E400 driven by a 78-year-old Bandon man was traveling northbound in the southbound lane when it nearly collided with a Bandon Police Department patrol vehicle and another passenger car. The Bandon police officer activated the patrol car’s overhead lights and turned around to stop the wrong-way driver. While the patrol car was trying to catch up, the Mercedes struck the southbound guardrail and veered back into the southbound lane. The Mercedes then collided head-on with Mayfield’s southbound Mazda Mazda3. Mayfield was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Mercedes’ driver was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.
• 3 p.m. — Troopers responded to a single-vehicle crash on Highway 26 in Clackamas County that took the life of Nina Westbrook, 34, of Gresham. OSP’s preliminary investigation indicated that a westbound Dodge Ram driven by a 39-year-old Portland man was traveling near Welches when the driver lost control and the vehicle crossed the roadway, went through a ditch and crashed head-on into a tree. At the time of the crash, the roadway was covered in snow and hail. Westbrook, a rear passenger, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Dodge’s driver was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. A 39-year-old Portland male passenger was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. A 2-year-old female passenger was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries. Weather, roadway conditions and speed were believed to be contributing factors in the crash.
THURSDAY, APRIL 16
• 1:16 p.m. — Troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 20 on the east end of Newport that took the life of Rosalea Ann Engelbrecht, 77, of Waldport. OSP’s preliminary investigation indicated that Engelbrecht was driving a westbound Chrysler Town and Country van when it began to veer into the oncoming lane for an unknown reason. An eastbound Toyota Highlander, driven by an 82-year-old Newport man, attempted to avoid the Chrysler, however, the van continued across the eastbound lane and collided head-on with the Toyota. Engelbrecht was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries and was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. The Toyota’s driver was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries. A Toyota passenger, a 77-year-old Newport woman, was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.
