Dorothy (Dot) Richardson, 87, of Philomath Oregon, died at home on Nov. 20, 2023.

Dot was born in Carlsbad, New Mexico, to William and Malinda Birchell, the sixth born of seven siblings. The family moved to Pedee, Oregon, when Dot was 10 years old. She graduated from Dallas High School in 1953. She then enlisted in the Air Force where she met and married Benton Richardson. Benton’s 20 years in the military had the family moving several times, including being stationed in Tripoli, Libya. Dot held down the fort while Benton served in Vietnam. After retirement the family moved to Philomath.

Dot was employed at a dry cleaners where she did clothing alterations. She was sought after for her sewing skills which were professionally executed.

Dot was an active and well known part of the Philomath community. She worked many years in the lunch room at the middle school and then in the office connecting with students and teachers. Dot was an active volunteer for AFS (foreign exchange student program) for decades. In the 1976-1977 school year, the family hosted an exchange student, Fabrice Baras, from France. Over the years she chaperoned several hundred AFS students on their final bus trips through Oregon to the airport and flights back home.

Dot was passionate about helping others, so after “retirement” managed the Philomath Food Bank for nearly two decades.

She was an avid reader and supporter of the local library. She loved tending her garden, working outside and feeding the backyard birds. Her pie baking was second to none.

Dot was predeceased by her husband, Benton; siblings, Richard, Mary, Helen, George and Willie Jane. She is survived by her sister, Alma Graham Irish; children, Melinda Passon, Doug Richardson, Lisa Brodkorb, seven grandchildren, eight great- grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
