The Philomath High School softball team dropped a 17-7 decision to Newport Thursday in an Oregon West Conference game.

The Cubs started to pull away from the visiting Warriors in the bottom of the third inning. Leading 5-3, Newport put up five runs to create a cushion that would hold up the rest of the way. Philomath did get back to within 11-7 in the fifth but the Cubs scored six in the sixth to end the contest on the 10-run rule.

Down 3-0 in the second, Philomath scored its first run on a one-run single by Kori Galvan. Ahnika Tryon had led off the inning with a single and scored on the play.

In the third, the Warriors scored twice. Janae Traglia hit a double to drive in Mia Bennett, who had reached earlier on a single. Traglia later scored to pull the Warriors to within two runs of the lead.

Grace Bennett had a one-run single in the fourth to score Kaylie Kohler, who had reached earlier on an error.

Three more PHS runs came across in the fifth. Kelsey Olsen had a two-run double with Hannah Bennett and Galvan both scoring. Bennett and Galvan had led off the inning with singles to set up Olsen’s plate appearance. Olsen later scored the inning’s third run.

Philomath outhit the Cubs, 14-10, but committed 12 errors in the field.

Hannah Bennett and Galvan each went 3 for 4 at the plate for the Warriors (3-14 overall, 2-6 Oregon West). Traglia and Olsen were both 2 for 3. Traglia had two doubles and Kohler also hit a double.

Elizabeth Morales-Marquez, Adrianna Hunter and Tryon all saw time in the circle and combined had just four earned runs against them.

Alexa Cleveland went 3 for 4 and Taylor Schaffner had six strikeouts for the Cubs (10-8, 5-4).

Philomath is scheduled to play Monday at home against Sweet Home.
