Martin M. Harvey
Monmouth, Jan. 1. — Martin M. Harvey, 59, died at his home near Monmouth Wednesday. While death came suddenly, as he sat relating old-time stories, it was not unexpected, as he had been in poor health for several years. Mr. Harvey came to Oregon when 21 years of age, settling in the Nehalem valley. He lived at Mist until 1910, when he moved to a farm one and one-half miles north of Monmouth. Mr. Harvey is survived by his wife, Jennie Harvey, two daughters and a son. Mrs. Margaret Carlson, Portland, is a sister.
Editor’s note: Martin Morsellis Harvey’s burial at Mount Union Cemetery is somewhat of a mystery. Obituaries published at the time placed him in the Knights of Pythias Cemetery and that burial site is also included on his death certificate. However, a cross-check of relatives, including his wife, and birth and death information along with other available records confirm that it is the Martin Harvey of Monmouth buried at Philomath. The death certificate of his wife, Jennie Harvey (maiden name of Burkhead) shows Mount Union Cemetery as her place of burial after she had died at a nursing home in Portland about 36 years after her husband. Mount Union Cemetery records show that she purchased the two burial spaces in 1945, years after her husband had died and many years before she died. Martin Harvey and Jennie Burkhead were married Sept. 9, 1897, in Columbia County, Oregon. A grave site for Mr. Harvey could not be found in Knights of Pythias cemetery in Columbia County. Jennie Harvey’s parents, George and LouRaina Burkhead, are buried at Mount Union Cemetery.
