Editor’s note: The following news story from 1902 uses the term “deaf and dumb,” an archaic term that today is considered to be offensive.
The funeral of Cecile Bethers occurred at Philomath last Sunday. She was the daughter of Mr. Geo. Bethers of Toledo. Cecile was a bright, happy child. During her short life of eleven years she had heard no sound, having been born deaf and dumb. At the time she was attending the school for the deaf at Salem where she was a general favorite with teachers and pupils. She was taken home about two weeks ago and died Friday Dec. 19. She is no longer deaf and dumb but is “Sining With the Angels.” Rev. Moore of Corvallis preached the funeral sermon.
