The Philomath High softball team couldn’t keep pace with Oregon West Conference unbeaten and No. 3-ranked Stayton in a Monday afternoon softball matchup on the road, 16-0. The game was called in the third on the mercy rule.
The Eagles scored a dozen times in the first inning to pull away early. In the circle, starting pitcher Jessica Rule threw the first two innings and allowed no hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Kenzi Beougher threw the third and allowed a hit while striking out two.
Philomath junior Presley Reichhuber broke up Stayton’s no-hit bid with a single. The team’s other base runners were junior Kelsey Olsen and senior Elizabeth Morales-Marquez reaching on walks.
Stayton (20-3 overall, 13-0 Oregon West) had seven hits scattered among seven batters.
Philomath (5-17, 4-9) is scheduled to play its final home game at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday against Newport. The team’s seniors will be recognized before the first pitch.
