The Philomath High School boys tennis team improved to 5-1 in its district and 11-2 overall with a 5-3 win on the home courts over Estacada.

The match came down to the last two doubles matches with Philomath getting a win in the No. 3 slot when Ethan Aynes and Owen Thomas pulled out a close win over their opponents, 7-5, 6-3.

The Warriors dominated the singles matches with three straight-set victories that were not close. Andrew Leonard (6-0, 6-0), Sawyer Ainsworth (6-2, 6-0) and Jackson Rice (6-1, 6-1) handled their opponents and Philomath was awarded a fourth singles win with a forfeit at No. 4.

Estacada’s strength was in doubles and the visitors won three of the four matches.

The Warriors will take a week off before returning for a final home match against Cascade at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7. The team added a match at McKay for May 8 to help prepare for its district tournament, which begins May 13.
