The city of Philomath received a $100,000 grant through an Oregon Department of Transportation program that will go toward much-needed repairs on Mount Union Avenue, City Manager Chris Workman announced at the Nov. 9 City Council meeting.

“We’ll be looking to make some improvements up there, it’s getting pretty bad,” Workman told councilors. “(Public Works Operations Supervisor) Garry Black has been very concerned about that road for a number of years, so it’ll get fixed; money well-spent on that street.”
The grant was awarded through the Small City Advisory Committee, established by ODOT in consultation with the League of Oregon Cities. It includes a representative from each of the five ODOT regions in the state.
Workman is a new member of the panel, which is primarily tasked with reviewing applications submitted under the Small City Allotment Program and to make recommendations for funding to the director.
Philomath received a $47,350 grant from the program for the 2019 calendar year. The council appropriated the funds to pay for chip-seal projects that summer on four city streets.
The committee intended to award $5 million in funds for the program’s 2021 year.
