Philomath residents looking to build strength in a group setting will have a new option starting next week.

StrongPeople, a strength-training program offered through the Oregon State University Extension Service, begins Monday, Nov. 2, at Peace Lutheran Church. Classes meet from 11 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

The program is free and open to adults 18 and older.

Becky Barrett, who recently completed OSU Extension training to lead StrongPeople classes in Philomath, said November will serve as a soft start for the program.

StrongPeople is designed for people with a range of abilities and fitness backgrounds. In a structured group setting, participants learn and practice exercises intended to help them make strength training part of their regular routine. The goal is building strength that carries over into daily life, whether that means working in the garden, staying active in recreation or feeling more confident in everyday tasks.

Classes will not meet on major holidays. Barrett said a Friday session may occasionally be skipped for an American Red Cross blood drive, and she plans to announce those dates in advance.

Advance registration isn’t required, though organizers ask that those interested let them know ahead of time. Paperwork will be completed at the first class attended.
