The Philomath City Council unanimously approved a resolution to proclaim January as Poverty Awareness Month during Monday night’s meeting, an action intended to bring attention to local efforts to help community members with basic needs.
Prior to the vote, Philomath Community Services gave a presentation on its efforts to fight food insecurity. David Low, PCS board president, provided councilors with an overview of the organization with an emphasis on the gleaners. PCS board vice president Jodi Russell accompanied Low at the table.
The city’s poverty rate is currently estimated at 7.9% based on figures published as part of the proclamation.
According to the approved resolution, the city “encourages all residents to consider volunteering, donating and otherwise supporting organizations and efforts in the community that are working to end poverty or alleviate its effects.”

Local foodstuff donations have become increasingly important. We have a PCS food donation barrel in the lobby of Citizens Bank Philomath. All donations will go directly to those in need in our community. Thank you!
