The Philomath Youth Activities Club and Philomath High School are teaming up to offer youth an expanded cheer program this coming school year.

The camp, open to boys and girls who will be in grades K-8, will be run by PHS cheer coach Kathy Kohler. There are three levels — Mini (grades K-2), Youth (grades 3-5) and Juniors (grades 6-8). Fifth graders with experience from last season are eligible to participate at the Juniors level.

The K-5 season runs during the fall only and the grades 6-8 season extends into mid-February. Practices take place 4:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at PHS.

The registration fee is $80 and if needed, other costs could be uniform ($100) and poms ($20). Financial assistance is available upon review of a request. The deadline to register is Aug. 18 and forms can be mailed to PYAC (P.O. Box 1358, Philomath, OR 97370) or dropped off at the PYAC office (421 S. 19th St.).

For more details, see the cheer information page and registration form available online.

Free summer clinics

Kohler and the PHS cheer program will be offering free summer clinics on July 14 and 21, and Aug. 11 and 18. Each session will run from 10:45-11:45 a.m. Registration is not required but participants will be asked to sign a district waiver. The classes, which will focus on technique and skill building, will take place on the PHS track by the grandstands.

Kohler said there are plans to also host a Future Warrior mini-camp this fall with those dates not yet finalized. In general, the sessions will likely run from late August into early September and there are plans for the participants to perform at halftime of a Sept. 8 football game.
