Cascade evened this week’s Oregon West Conference baseball series with Philomath by taking a 14-4 win in six innings Wednesday on the school’s Turner-area campus.
The Cougars (7-12 overall, 6-2 Oregon West) flexed early with a six-run second inning. Philomath (8-11, 4-4) countered with three runs in the top of the third but Cascade added single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings and then had a five-run frame in the sixth to end the game on the run rule.
Down 6-0, Philomath got on the scoreboard with two outs in the third on junior AJ Altishin’s one-run double to left field. Senior Caleb Babcock followed with a two-run single to center to cut the deficit to 6-3.
Philomath’s fourth run came in the top of the sixth inning on a one-run single by junior Jacob Hernandez.
Babcock went 2 for 3 at the plate with two RBIs. Altishin and sophomore Jayce Iverson had doubles. Junior CK Kvidt and Iverson both saw time on the mound.
For the Cougars, freshman Jacob Born went 3 for 5 with three RBIs. Junior Caden Bitikofer and sophomore Wyatt Metcalf each had two hits. At pitcher, senior Slade Hudson threw all six innings and allowed six hits and no walks with 12 strikeouts.
Philomath and Cascade will wrap up the series at 5 p.m. Thursday at Terry Stephenson Field.
