The Benton County Board of Commissioners voted 2-1 on Tuesday to approve Republic Services’ proposed expansion of the Coffin Butte Landfill.

The Nov. 4 deliberations lasted just over an hour. The commissioners approved the application with modifications to conditions of approval.

Commissioners Pat Malone and Nancy Wyse voted in favor of the expansion. Commissioner Gabe Shepherd voted nay.

County staff are preparing a final written decision document that will include findings and justification for the approval. The commissioners will formally adopt their final decision Nov. 17 during a regular meeting at the Kalapuya Building.

No public testimony will be accepted at the Nov. 17 meeting as the hearing record is closed, officials said.

Republic Services appealed to the commissioners after the Benton County Planning Commission denied the expansion application. The board held public hearings Oct. 22-23, considering evidence from the Planning Commission hearing and new evidence submitted since the Aug. 12 appeal filing.

The Nov. 17 meeting is scheduled for Monday instead of the usual Tuesday to accommodate commissioners’ attendance at the annual Oregon Association of Counties conference.

More information about the land-use decision process and the landfill expansion application is available on the county’s website.
