Philomath High School runners swept individual honors Saturday at the Willamette Golden Hour 5K with senior Leo Pausch and sophomore Cassidy Smart both winning varsity races.
Pausch covered the course in 16 minutes, 27.84 seconds for a victory by 32.14 seconds over the runner-up. Smart also won in relatively easy fashion with an 18:51.48, which was 47.64 seconds faster than the second-place finisher and was a personal-best time.

The meet was hosted by Willamette High School in Eugene.
Philomath also had a pair of runners who had third-place finishes. For the boys, senior Lukas Hernandez turned in a time of 17:17.51 and beat out two Klamath Union runners to the finish. Freshman Sienna Bushnell was a solid third for the girls with a time of 20:27.05.
The boys finished second behind Klamath Union in the team standings. Junior Galen Murch finished 10th in 17:59.24, junior Cam Herbert was 11th in 18:56.44 and freshman Braeden Colvin placed 17th in 19:30.01.
Klamath Union’s five scoring runners were fourth, fifth, seventh, ninth and 13th to edge the Warriors in the team scoring by four points.
Rounding out the varsity runners for PHS were brothers Jacob Hernandez, junior, who was 19th in 19:45.48, and sophomore Sammy Hernandez, who finished 23rd in 19:56.81.
Only Smart and Bushnell competed in the varsity girls race for Philomath.
Philomath’s next meet on the schedule arrives this coming Saturday for the Harrier Classic at Bryant Park in Albany. The varsity races are scheduled for 2:10 p.m. (girls) and 2:40 p.m. (boys).
