The Philomath High boys basketball team will not travel to Portland on Monday to compete in the Riverdale Tournament, Athletic Director Tony Matta said, and other games through the rest of the week could either be canceled or postponed.
The Warriors were scheduled to play the host school at 4:30 p.m. Coach Blake Ecker said one of the tournament’s participating teams was hit hard by COVID and pulled out. Philomath on a smaller scale is also dealing with the virus.
Matta said that at this time, the boys basketball team is still scheduled to make the trip over to Riverdale to compete on Wednesday.
For the girls basketball team, the status of the Vince Dulcich Tournament at Astoria High School, currently scheduled for Tuesday through Thursday, appears to be up in the air. PHS girls coach Ben Silva said Astoria is considering rescheduling the tournament for later in the week because of weather-related challenges.
Besides Philomath and Astoria, other schools scheduled to appear in the tournament are Clatskanie, Gladstone, Marshfield, Mazama, Tillamook and Warrenton.
Both the PHS boys and girls saw games scheduled for Dec. 21 against Hidden Valley canceled for COVID-related reasons. Neither team has taken the court since the Dec. 16-18 South Coast Les Schwab Tournament in Coos Bay.
