The Philomath High School volleyball team rolled to a straight-set victory over an overmatched Newport squad on Tuesday night, 25-13, 25-8, 25-17.
The Warriors take records of 13-7 overall and 4-3 in the Oregon West into a Senior Night matchup on Thursday against North Marion. The varsity match is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
Philomath High coach Autumn Hilberg said the squad outplayed Newport in every aspect and was particularly strong with its passing and serving.
Senior Abigail Brown had an effective night with 10 kills on 14 swings and Hilberg said she also stepped up her defensive game with 12 digs and four blocks as well as five control blocks. The coach added that freshman Shaylee May hit well.
On defense, junior Ahnika Tryon and senior Kori Galvan played the back row consistently, Hilberg said.
“While defense and serve receive doesn’t seem that glamorous, it’s what makes the team effective,” she said. “They both did well tonight communicating and defending.”
Tryon had a team-high 14 digs and an efficient .670 hitting percentage.
Sophomore setter Ashleigh Brown finished with 27 assists and shared the team high with Tryon for aces with four. Junior Madison Juhl was the team’s co-leader in blocks with four.
