The Philomath High’s wrestling team was sitting in fourth place Friday after the first day of the 39-school Grants Pass Varsity Winter Kickoff.

PHS wrestlers River Sandstrom (113), Porter Compton (138), Riley Barrett (150) and Lake Mulberry (215) made it through the first day unbeaten to remain in contention for first-place medals. Those four wrestlers will begin action Saturday morning in the semifinals.

Lukas Hernandez (132), Gradin Fairbanks (165), JJ Lewis (175), Brayden Williams (126), Wyatt Barrett (132), Ryder Zitlau (157) and Brady Russell (285) are still alive in the consolation brackets to score points and win medals.

In the team race, South Medford leads the pack with 75, followed by Eagle Point and Illinois Valley at 74 and Philomath at 69.5.

The tournament is scheduled to resume at 10 a.m. Saturday.
