Philomath junior Joe Barnes threw a complete-game one-hitter, the offense pounded out 14 hits and the defense committed no errors in a 13-0 rout over Madras Tuesday afternoon.
Barnes had a career performance on the mound for the Warriors to help the team build momentum with a second straight victory. Barnes struck out 10, walked four and allowed only a one-out single in the second inning. During one stretch from the third and into the fifth, he struck out five of six batters that he faced.
Meanwhile, the offense put together its best showing of the season with nine batters getting at least one hit. Junior Kayson Olsen went 3 for 3 with a double, three runs and three RBIs, junior Grant Niemann was 2 for 2 with a double, triple, three runs and four RBIs, freshman AJ Altishin was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs and sophomore Caleb Babcock finished 2 for 4. In addition, senior Mason Stearns had a double and two RBIs and junior Logan Matthews scored three runs.
Philomath (3-4) scored twice in the first inning on a one-run single by Olsen and a sacrifice fly by Altishin. In the second, the Warriors scored two more. Matthews singled to left and a run scored on an error. Niemann then hit a sac fly to left to drive in another run for a 4-0 lead.
Another run came across in the third on a double to left by Altishin. And in the fourth, Philomath scored two more for a 7-0 lead. Niemann hit a one-run triple to center and then scored on an Olsen single.
Philomath then cashed in six times in the fifth to account for the final margin. Niemann hit a two-run double, Stearns followed with a two-run triple and Olsen had a one-run double for a 12-0 lead. Junior Colton Hruska drove in the final run on a single to center.
Junior Dasen Rodriguez had the lone hit for Madras (6-3).
Philomath will play a doubleheader on the road Saturday in Eastern Oregon with a pair of games in La Grande. First, the Warriors will face the host school at 11 a.m. and then go up against Fruitland, Idaho, with the start time listed as 1:30 p.m.
