Newport built an 8-0 lead through four innings, survived a late offensive threat from Philomath and then ended the game on the 10-run rule in the sixth in a 12-2 victory.

The Cubs (4-18 overall, 4-9 Oregon West) broke open a scoreless tie with four runs in the third and another four in the fourth. One of Newport’s highlights offensively was a solo home run by Isabella Stevenson to lead off the third.

Philomath (1-20, 1-11) couldn’t get much going offensively with its first hit being a Zoee Howard single to lead off the fourth. Haley King was hit by a pitch and Emma May also had a single in the inning but the Warriors were not able to score.

In the sixth, Howard led off with a solo home run to get Philomath on the scoreboard. King followed with a single and would later come around to score on a Tatum Pope single.

Newport scored four more runs in the bottom of the sixth and the game ended with one out.

Howard went 2 for 3 with King, May, Pope and Janae Traglia also collecting hits. Laighla Hockema and King both saw time in the circle. Eight of Newport’s 12 runs were unearned. Hockema struck out three and King fanned five.

Stevenson led Newport with a 3-for-4 effort that included two RBIs. Sophia Bush also drove in two runs and pitched all six innings for the Cubs, allowing six hits and four walks with four strikeouts.

Philomath is scheduled to play at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at home against Sweet Home. The team will then host Stayton at noon Saturday and end the season at 5 p.m. Monday at North Marion.
