The Philomath High School wrestling team won 18 of 23 on-the-mat bouts and swept a pair of duals on Thursday at North Marion.
Sophomore River Sandstrom, senior Ben Hernandez, senior Caleb Blackburn, senior Riley Barrett, junior Gradin Fairbanks, senior David Griffith, sophomore Brady Russell and junior Jacob Hamlet finished the evening unbeaten for Philomath.
In a 57-15 victory over North Marion, the Warriors won 10 of the 12 matches — nine of those on pins. Raising their hands in victory after sticking opponents were Sandstrom (106 pounds), Hernandez (120), Blackburn (126), Barrett (132), Fairbanks (152), Griffith (170), junior Jared Gerding (182), Russell (195) and Hamlet (220).
The results did not include times on pins.
The lone PHS victory that went the distance was a 20-13 decision at 138 pounds by freshman Porter Compton.
The Warriors beat Stayton, 51-22, with eight wins out of the 11 bouts on the mat. Sandstrom, Hernandez, Barrett and Hamlet all had pins in under a minute. Sophomore Ryder Zitlau (145) and Fairbanks also had first-period pins. Russell had a second-period pin.
Russell and Hamlet both wrestled up against the Eagles at 220 and 285 pounds, respectively.
The closest match in the Stayton dual involved Blackburn, who recorded a 7-4 decision over Conrad Baxter. Both wrestlers were state qualifiers a year ago. Griffith had a forfeit win.
Philomath did not have entrants in 113 in either dual, at 285 vs. North Marion and at 195 vs. Stayton — the latter two being double forfeits.
Sweet Home also participated in the duals event but did not face the Warriors on the mat.
Philomath is scheduled to compete again at 10 a.m. Saturday with participation in the Screamin’ Eagle at Santiam Christian in Adair Village. Joining the host school and the Warriors will be Colton, Creswell, Culver, Dayton, Gervais, Oakland, Pleasant Hill, Regis, Sheridan and Toledo.
