In my last Warrior Nation blog on Friday, I wrote about state-level decisions to ease restrictions on full-contact sports which gives Philomath High a more promising outlook for playing traditional games next month. I included a graphic with the article showing the football schedule.
The other “fall sports” also have schedules that are being put together and in this blog, I’ll take a look at boys and girls soccer. The high school’s athletic secretary shared the latest revisions with me on Friday. Let’s start with boys soccer.
The Warriors are scheduled to play their first game on the road in Sisters against Mountain View on March 4 (if the field’s not covered in snow). Philomath will be facing a much larger school in the contest with Mountain View in Class 6A.
The team will play at home on March 9 against Newport — and these two schools have had some great games in recent years. The start time on that one is 3 p.m., and it appears that fans won’t be able to watch in person with pandemic restrictions.
PHS has needed to adjust start times on soccer games for a few reasons, including a shortage of officials that will require JV and varsity games to be “stacked” and to also not create a hardship on students with distance learning.
The rest of the schedule shows home games against Cascade (March 16), Sisters (March 23) and Stayton (March 30) and road games with Stayton (March 11), Sweet Home (March 18), Newport (March 25) and Cascade (April 1). There is also a full schedule of JV games.
The girls soccer team has almost the same schedule but at the opposite location. The Warriors are supposed to open at 3 p.m. on March 4 at home against Sisters (the 4A school, not the 6A Bend school like the boys will play). The other home games will be against Stayton (March 11), Sweet Home (March 18), Newport (March 25) and Cascade (April 1). The road games as the schedule currently shows will be against Newport (March 9), Cascade (March 16), Sisters (March 23) and Stayton (March 30).
It’s not known to me what plans may be in the works for culminating week, which for soccer is supposed to be in the period of April 5-10.
Soccer team practices officially start on Feb. 22.
