The Philomath High School boys soccer team converted six scoring opportunities Tuesday night at Dallas for a 6-2 victory. Junior Sammy Hernandez recorded a hat trick in the victory, the team’s first this season under new head coach Gerardo Garibay.
Philomath shot out to a 2-0 lead in the game’s first 14 minutes with goals by junior Dreyton Nuño in the 10th and senior Esias Sapp in the 14th. But Dallas, a 5A school, had an immediate response with junior Damian Alcaraz scoring to cut its deficit to 2-1.
Philomath regained a two-goal advantage in the 21st minute on a shot by senior Jacob Hernandez. Six minutes later, the Warriors went up 4-1 on junior Sammy Hernandez’s first goal. Dallas junior Eric Cowart found the net a minute later, however, and the Warriors had a 4-2 advantage at the break.
In the second half, Philomath finished off the opponent with two more goals — both by Sammy Hernandez on shots in the 42nd and 57th minutes. Jacob Hernandez and Sapp had assists on the final two goals.
Dallas dropped to 0-4 with the loss.
Philomath (1-2-1) will hit the road for the fifth straight game to open this season on Thursday with a trip to Molalla. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
