The Philomath boys track and field team put together a dominant performance Friday at the season-opening Elmira Relays with nine first-place finishes, a performance that helped the Warriors win the team title with 125 points — well clear of runner-up Crescent Valley’s 97.

Junior Jamin Peters in the throws and junior Kaden Howard in the jumps each had two victories. Peters swept the shot put and discus, heaving the shot 43 feet, 7 inches for first place and launching the discus 138-7 to take that title as well. His teammate, junior Jonah Sailor, backed him up with a runner-up finish in the discus at 114-6, giving Philomath a 1-2 punch in that event.
The throwers relay team of freshman Abisai Navarette, Sailor, Jamin Peters and senior Josiah Peters added a second-place finish in 52.69.
Howard was equally dominant in the horizontal jumps, winning the long jump at 22-5 and the triple jump at 40-5. Sophomore Nathan Seits complemented Howard with a strong all-around day, winning the high jump at 5-10 and placing third in the triple jump at 36-1. Sophomore Dreyton Nuño tied for second in the high jump at 5-8.
Josiah Peters added a first-place finish in the javelin, reaching 187 feet, 8.5 inches to win by more than 40 feet over the runner-up. It’s the top javelin throw in 4A so far this season.
On the track, junior Bryce Hruska won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.53 seconds, third-best in 4A so far this season, and anchored two relay wins. Hruska led off the sprint medley relay team that also included Howard, C.D. Nuño and Dreyton Nuño, winning in 1:39.32. The distance medley relay team of junior Galen Murch, freshman Braeden Colvin, senior Lukas Hernandez and senior Leo Pausch also took first, crossing in 11:34.27.
Philomath also picked up a third-place finish in the 4-by-100 relay, with Howard, Dreyton Nuño, Hruska and C.D. Nuño running 45.86. The 4-by-1600 relay team of freshman Milo Morrison, junior Oakley Pausch, Murch and Leo Pausch picked up a runner-up finish in 20:52.91, and senior Blake Hauck placed second in the pole vault at 11-0.
Girls finish 3rd
The Philomath girls also had plenty of highlights in their third-place team finish, led by a standout day from sophomore Cassidy Smart.
Smart won the 3,000 meters in a state-best 10:38.39 and also ran legs on three relay teams that placed among the top three. In the field events, Philomath had a 1-2-3 finish in the triple jump. Sophomore Reagan Nuño won the event at 32-4.75, sophomore Kya Bolton was second at 32-2.25 and junior Hailey Eckhold was third at 31-10.
Eckhold had a big all-around day, also tying for second in the pole vault at 7-6, placing third in the shot put at 31-9.5 and contributing to a winning performance in the 4-by-100 throwers relay. That team — freshman Caelyn Avery, freshman Rebekah Workman, Eckhold and junior Jordyn Hood — took first in 58.48.
Elsewhere in the field events, Hood placed third in the discus at 93-1.
The 4-by-100 team of Smart, freshman Sienna Bushnell, Nuño and Bolton placed third in 52.42. The 4-by-200 team of freshman Makayla Nelson, freshman Ruby Oster, freshman Adilee Stewart and Bolton also took third in 1:59.44. The 4-by-400 squad of Smart, freshman Ava Oster, Bushnell and Nuño added another third-place finish in 4:19.96.
Smart also anchored the distance medley relay team of Bushnell, Ava Oster, Nuño and Smart to a runner-up finish in 13:04.07. That time breaks the school record by nine-hundredths of a second set two years ago by Ana Candanoza, Brooke McDaniel, Melea Lattin and Adele Beckstead.
The Philomath girls finished with 100 points behind Crescent Valley (133) and Klamath Union (125).
The track teams are scheduled to compete in two meets next week — April 8 at Cascade and April 11 at the Aaron and Marie Jones Invitational at Blue River.
