Philomath High sophomore Hailey Smith and junior Riley Mason teamed up in more than one way Thursday evening in an Oregon West Conference softball showdown at Warrior Field.
Mason led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a double to center and Smith followed with a triple to left to give the Warriors a 14-13 victory.
Smith and Mason also teamed up as the team’s battery. Smith pitched a complete game for the win.
The victory snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Warriors and evened the season series with Newport, which took a 16-1 win on the coast in the first meeting back on April 27. The rubber game will be May 20 at Newport.
Philomath had to come from behind for the win. The Cubs took a 9-2 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning. The Warriors put six runs up in their half of the fourth to cut their deficit to 9-8.
Philomath entered the bottom of the sixth down 11-8 but scored five times to take the lead. Newport (4-15 overall, 3-6 Oregon West) was able to score twice in the top of the seventh but Mason and Smith responded with their hitting heroics in the bottom half to secure the victory.
Philomath (7-9, 2-7) is scheduled to play at 5 p.m. Monday at North Marion.
