The Benton County Historical Society will unveil a new interactive exhibition this weekend that chronicles how American families have consumed and shared information over the past century.

“From Airwaves to Algorithms: The Evolution of Family Media” opens Saturday, Aug. 9 at the Philomath Museum and will run through April 4. The exhibit explores the transformation of media from early radio and television broadcasts to today’s personalized digital experiences.

“It’s been a delight to research and develop this exhibit, and to present it in a fun, visually engaging way,” said Natascha Adams, curator of exhibitions. “It’s unlike anything we’ve showcased at BCHS before — designed to be enjoyable for all ages and featuring hands-on interactives that I’m especially excited to share.”

The exhibition features historic objects and interactive displays that demonstrate how media has evolved from one-way broadcasts to interactive, personalized experiences. Visitors will journey through decades of technological change, learning how information sharing has transformed family life and public discourse.

The exhibit highlights how entertainment and information merged in family settings, showing how media shaped public life and brought families together around radios and television screens.

Educational components include lesson plans for teachers to use before and after field trips. The curriculum focuses on developing critical thinking skills and helping students become responsible citizens in the digital age.

Anya Ballinger, curator of education, is coordinating field trips for school classes, home-school groups, after-school clubs and other community organizations. Groups can schedule visits by emailing education@bentoncountymuseums.org.

Philomath Museum will host a public reception to celebrate the opening at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12.

The museum is open 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Admission is free but donations are welcome.
