Natasha Nuño is hoping to tackle a problem she’s watched play out for years — girls quitting sports just as they’re hitting their stride.
Nuño, who is putting on the camp along with her daughter, Rivers, said research shows girls drop out of sports at roughly double the rate of boys, with dropout rates reaching 45% to 50% by high school. She points to low body confidence, fear of judgment, the biomechanical changes that come with puberty and social pressure as leading reasons.
To help counter that trend, Nuño is hosting a two-day “confidence camp” for girls ages 9-16 on Aug. 21-22 at Chiseled Spirit CrossFit (1243 Main St.). The camp runs from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. both days and costs $55. Registration is limited to the first 30 participants who sign up.
The camp’s schedule blends physical training with conversations aimed at building self-esteem. Participants will learn safe weightlifting techniques from female trainers, along with running form and speed and agility drills. A registered dietitian will lead discussions on nutrition and body image and campers will prepare healthy mini meals together.
The schedule also includes a question-and-answer session with female college athletes, a conversation with a nurse about health topics, an introduction to sports psychology and time on the punching bag.
Those interested in registering can do so online or by scanning the QR code on the event flyer.
