A 34-year-old Toledo man was killed late Wednesday when he was struck by a car on Highway 20 about 9 miles east of Newport in a crash the driver initially believed involved a deer, Oregon State Police reported.
Troopers responded to the scene at approximately 11:35 p.m. Wednesday after receiving a report that a pedestrian may have been struck. OSP’s preliminary investigation indicated that Orion David Sliwka, 19, of Salem, was driving a beige 1996 Acura Integra westbound on Highway 20 when the vehicle struck what he believed at the time was a deer. He continued driving and eventually stopped at a business in Newport.
While at the business, a second party spoke with the driver and his passenger and learned they may have actually struck a person. That individual called 911 to report the incident.
The Toledo Police Department subsequently located a deceased pedestrian in a ditch near milepost 10. He was identified as Cordaro Ryan Stock, 34, of Toledo.
Neither the driver nor his passenger was injured. OSP said the driver cooperated with investigators.
Highway 20 was affected for approximately six hours during the on-scene investigation. Pacific West Ambulance, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, the Toledo Police Department, the Newport Police Department and the Oregon Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation.
