Three PHS runners put in top-5 showings at Woahink Lake meet

Philomath freshman Adele Beckstead held off Siuslaw’s all-state senior runner at the finish line in the girls’ race and juniors Brody Bushnell and Mateo Candanoza had second- and fifth-place finishes, respectively, in the boys’ race at Saturday’s Lake Woahink XC Invitational at Honeyman State Park near Florence.

Beckstead continues to impress with her fourth straight meet victory — the first three coming in Stayton, Eugene and Cottage Grove. Coach Joe Fulton said Beckstead worked through “several vicious elbows … during some of the early twists and turns of the course” from another runner.

“That was a mistake … poor and illegal strategy,” Fulton said. “And it was enough to take the ever-present smile off Adele’s face.”

Beckstead pulled away while the other runner faded but Siuslaw’s Rylee Colton challenged in the stretch. Beckstead came through and won with a time of 20:04.7, fourth-tenths of a second ahead of Colton.

In the team race, Class 6A North Medford — which had four runners in the top 10 — took first place but Philomath pulled off what would be considered an upset over Siuslaw for the second-place trophy. North Medford’s margin of victory was just eight points over the Warriors.

Freshman Kateri Pindell placed 10th in 21:42.4, senior Kaeleigh Houchin was 14th in 21:42.4, senior Audrey Gerding took 15th in 21:53.7 and freshman Hannah McDaniel was 17th in 22:11.0. Rounding out the varsity results for the Warriors were freshman Hallie Morrison in 29th (22:14.5) and sophomore Alexa Eckhold in 37th (23:42.4).

Philomath accomplished those exceptional team results despite missing its No. 2 runner, Ingrid Hellesto.

The Warrior boys squad also had one of its top varsity runners missing with senior Mark Grimmer not available. Siuslaw won the meet with Nampa (Idaho) finishing second and Philomath third, edging 6A Roseburg. Eight schools and complete varsity teams at the competition.

Siuslaw senior Chad Hughes took individual hoors in 17:00.5 with Bushnell settling for second in 17:18.9. Bushnell is running at less than 100% as he works through illness. Candanoza worked his way up to fifth and came in with a time of 17:33.4.

Junior Ben Hernandez was another runner that made up a lot of ground during the race and finished 14th in 18:22.2. Junior Jesse Erickson was 25th in 18:56.6. Junior Micah Matthews was the team’s No. 5 runner in 45th (20:16.6) and freshman Warwick Bushnell was 53rd (20:39.5) to round out the varsity entrants.

In the JV girls race, Philomath put in a strong showing and easily defeated the only other full team running. Freshman Kyah Weeber won in 23:06.2. Sophomore Phoebe Coen (second, 23:15.4) and freshman Brooke McDaniel (third, 23:16.7) gave PHS a 1-2-3 finish in the race. The JV boys were fifth in a field of eight teams with senior Bryan Thomas the top PHS runner in fourth at 20:15.4.

Philomath can now turn its attention to the Paul Mariman Invitational, which is scheduled for the home course on Saturday. The day begins with middle school races at 11 and 11:30 a.m., followed by the JV races at 1:30 and 2 p.m. The varsity girls will run at 2:30 p.m., and the varsity boys at 3 p.m.
