A unique Maxtivity event planned for Friday evening in Corvallis, Beavers football at Reser Stadium on Saturday evening and a mushroom festival in Albany on Sunday are among the options for upcoming events.

And special mention here — Talk Like a Pirate in Philomath is scheduled for Monday evening (a day beyond the scope of our weekend) at Marys River Grange Hall.

Here’s a rundown of Philomath events and activities for the weekend — defined here as Friday evening through Sunday — along with a selected few from neighboring communities.

Friday, Sept. 20

Five teams of local artists, makers and creatives will battle for crafting supremacy Friday evening at Maxtivity Maker Mayhem at the Corvallis Community Center. The live art-making competition will begin at 7 p.m. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. for an event that also includes a silent auction and concessions by Nick’s: Soul Food and Oakshire Brewing. Admission is limited to adults ages 21 and over. Organizers said the idea for Maxtivity Maker Mayhem was inspired by popular reality television shows like “Project Runway,” “Chopped” and “Iron Chef.” For more details on this unique event that was organized by Philomath-based Maxtivity Artsa and Crafts Creative Space, see this Philomath News preview story or check out the organization’s website. The Corvallis Community Center is located at 2601 NW Tyler Ave.

Unbeaten Philomath will hit the road to North Bend in a nonconference high school football matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Warriors come into the contest with a 2-0 record after victories over Newport (46-10) and Milwaukie (49-0) while North Bend sports a 1-1 record with a loss to Seaside (35-24) and win over Gladstone (24-12). For those who can’t make the drive, it appears as though North Bend will broadcast the game online at this website.

Saturday, Sept. 21

Oregon State will be playing at Reser Stadium for the second straight and will again face a Big Ten opponent (yes, it’s strange to say, the Ducks are in the Big Ten). This time, the Beavers will match up against Purdue with the kickoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m. These two schools have met just twice in the past with both games on Purdue’s turf — a 22-14 OSU win in 1967 (remember the “Giant Killers”) and a 30-21 Boilermakers win in 2021. This season, Purdue has a 49-0 win over Indiana State and a 66-7 loss to Notre Dame. The Beavers are 2-1 with wins over Idaho State, 38-15, and San Diego State, 21-0, and a loss to Oregon, 49-14. Check here for game tickets or you might have luck on SeatGeek. The game will be televised live on the CW with Ted Robinson, Ryan Leaf and Nigel Burton calling the action. It can also be heard on the Beaver Sports Radio Network.

Philomath Museum’s “The Big Picture: American Quilts From the Volckening Collection” exhibit is up at the Moreland Gallery on the second floor. The show, which will remain in place through Oct. 12, features the collection of Bill and Linda Volckening with quilts that go back as far as the 18th century. On the museum’s ground floor, the “What Is It?” exhibition remains with objects that were used locally in the past and would have been familiar to most people living then — an opportunity to enjoy your encounters with the past. Philomath Museum is open from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Admission is free.

The Philomath High School cross-country team will hit the Northwest Classic course at Lane Community College in Eugene. The 1A-4A varsity races are scheduled for 12:20 p.m. (girls) and 1 p.m. (boys). The girls are considered a favorite to win the 4A state title this season and the boys are coming off a team victory last weekend at Stayton. This is a very large meet with several schools in various divisions. Lane Community College, by the way, is the same venue that hosts the state championships.

Sunday, Sept. 15

The Philomath Farmers’ Market goes from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. in front of Philomath Community Library with a vendor list that includes produce, other food items, crafts, services and information. The POP Club for kids is also available. The market accepts Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program cards and Double Up Food Bucks, which match SNAP purchases up to $20 each week for fresh produce and food products.

A new event that you might be interested in is the Albany Mushroom Festival at Timber Linn Park in Albany. The event is scheduled to run from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. The festival will feature live music, food vendors, beer garden, games for all ages, an artisanal market that showcases mushroom products and educational workshops and displays. Admission is free. You can find more info on this festival on the organization’s website or on their social media accounts through Facebook or Instagram.

Finally, I’ll mention an event for the history buffs out there who also might enjoy a cold one. The Rooftop History Tour will have its final installment at 5:30 p.m. at Sky High Brewing and Pub (160 NW Jackson Ave., Corvallis). It takes place on the establishment’s rooftop and according to organizers, “get a bird’s eye view of locations that connect to a dozen stories illustrating key moments in the story of Corvallis.” It runs for an hour and covers major events in Corvallis history. A half-pour of a Sky High brew is included in the admission price of $19 per person. You can get tickets online here.
