Local artists, makers and creatives will square off Friday, Sept. 20 in Corvallis for Maxtivity Maker Mayhem, a five-team competition that features a series of timed crafting challenges, Maxtivity Arts and Crafts Creative Space announced.
The live art-making competition will begin at 7 p.m. at the Corvallis Community Center, which is located at 2601 NW Tyler Ave. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. for an event that also includes a silent auction and concessions for sale by Nick’s: Soul Food and Oakshire Brewing. Admission is limited to adults ages 21 and over.
The participants competing in the challenges will be tasked with using only materials from Maxtivity’s unique and diverse inventory, meaning every entry must be crafted from recycled, upcycled and repurposed items. Competitors will be judged on their creativity, innovation and ability to think on their feet.
Organizers said the idea for Maxtivity Maker Mayhem was inspired by popular reality television shows like “Project Runway,” “Chopped” and “Iron Chef.”
“The Maxtivity Maker Mayhem is unlike any other event in our community,” Louise-Annette Burgess, Maxtivity executive director, said through a press release. “It’s a high-energy, creative showdown that brings together artists, makers and fans of creative reuse for a night of fun, laughter and pure ingenuity — all in support of our mission to provide equitable access to creative opportunities.”
When the crafting competition begins, teams will face surprise challenges with intense time limits with a panel of judges looking on, a group that includes Chas Jones, Philomath mayor; Craig McPherson of CNC Wood Cutters; and Kristin Daly, education program manager of the Calapooia Watershed Council.
Proceeds raised from the event go toward the support of Maxtivity’s creative programs, camps, classes, workshops and artists-in-residence.
Tickets, which are available for advance purchase online, are $4 for general admission, $14 for reserved seating, $40 for VIP seating (two people) or $60 for a paintbrush package, which includes reserved seating behind sponsors, two drink tickets and a snack for two people. Any remaining seats on the day of the event will be sold at the door for $10 each.
