The Philomath High School boys basketball team struggled for the second straight game and dropped a 54-48 decision at Sweet Home on Friday night.
As was the case in a Wednesday loss against Cascade, the Warriors got into a hole and had to try to claw their way back into the contest. Sweet Home had an 11-point lead by the end of the first quarter but Philomath stayed within striking distance. The Warriors trailed 38-34 going into the fourth.
The Huskies held on, however, to even their record at 4-4. Philomath drops to 5-2 overall but remains 0-1 in conference play with Friday’s game designated as nonleague.
Senior Chase Beardsley was back in the lineup against Sweet Home and finished with a team-high 16 points on four field goals and 5 of 6 free throws. Beardsley drained three 3-pointers, including two in the fourth as the Warriors tried to complete a comeback.
Sophomore Ty May hit double digits as well with 14 points on four field goals and 4 of 9 free throws. May buried a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter.
Senior Hunter Coulter scored 18 and senior Aiden Tyler had 17 to lead the Huskies.
Philomath is scheduled to play Tuesday at Woodburn.
