The Philomath High School softball team opened a stretch of three straight road games with a 12-2 loss Monday at Sweet Home.
The Huskies put together big innings in the first and fourth and ended the game in the fifth on the 10-run rule. Sweet Home has defeated the Warriors twice this season and the two schools will play a third time in the regular-season finale on May 9.
Philomath (1-18 overall, 1-9 Oregon West) will play Wednesday at North Marion and then head to Cascade on Thursday.
Sweet Home (7-12, 5-4) scored five in the bottom of the first. The Warriors got on the board in the third inning. Junior Tatum Pope opened with a single and junior Janae Traglia followed with a double to right. Pope scored on an infield ground out on a ball put in play by junior Laighla Hockema.
Sweet Home added another five to its total in the fourth. The Warriors came back with a run in the fifth on a one-run single by Hockema. Traglia, who hit a one-out triple and had the game’s only extra-base hits for either team, easily scored.
In addition to Traglia’s 2 for 3, Pope’s hit and Hockema’s hit and two RBIs, the Warriors also got a single from junior Zoee Howard in the second inning.
Hockema went the distance in the circle for PHS.
Junior Jocelyn Fairchild led the Huskies with a 3-for-4 effort and two RBIs. Sophomore Katriona Harris pitched a complete game.
